A Bitcoin wallet manages the keys that let you receive, hold and spend BTC. The important part is not the app icon. The important part is whether you control the keys and can restore them safely.
Hot wallets
Hot wallets run on an internet-connected phone or computer. They are convenient for small balances, tests and frequent payments, but they inherit the risk of the device they run on.
Cold wallets
Cold wallets keep signing keys isolated from the internet. Hardware wallets are the most common option. They are slower to use, but they reduce exposure for long-term holdings.
Seed phrase basics
Most wallets give you a seed phrase during setup. That phrase is the recovery backup. If someone gets it, they may be able to move the funds. If you lose it and your device fails, you may lose access.
Choosing a wallet
- Use a small hot wallet for learning and daily amounts.
- Use a reputable cold wallet for larger balances.
- Verify addresses on the signing device when possible.
- Test recovery before storing meaningful value.
Common mistake
Do not keep the only backup as a screenshot, cloud note or email draft. Read the seed phrase safety guide before moving funds you cannot afford to lose.
